Molar Pregnancy

June 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Molar pregnancy is one among many types of complicated pregnancies. It happens as a result of abnormal fertilization process. Normally, a fertilized egg contains 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father. But, in a molar pregnancy, the fertilized egg doesn’t have mother’s chromosomes. It just contains paternal chromosomes. Since the requirement for the development of a fetus is not met, there is no fetus and no amniotic sac. All that grows, is a mass of cysts. These cysts grow quite rapidly and in some cases grow beyond the uterus also. They can easily be seen through an ultrasound test. The human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) levels also grow abnormally.

In partial molar pregnancy cases, the fertilized egg might well contain maternal chromosomes but also has double the number of paternal chromosomes. So, in total there are 69 chromosomes in that egg. This happens when two sperms fertilize an egg. In these cases, chances of having fetus are there but not a normal one. Genetically, the fetus is abnormal and thus should be removed at the earliest. Even if it is not removed, a baby can’t be expected out of it. So, it is advisable to terminate such a pregnancy. This can be done by means of a minor surgery in which the growing cysts are removed completely.

For a mother, it can be really disturbing to give up such a pregnancy. Yet, she should not give up as she can conceive again and carry a normal fetus this time. But before planning another pregnancy, she should consult her doctor. The doctor might ask her to wait untill her hCG levels go down to settle to zero. If she conceives before the advisable time, she might end up having another molar pregnancy as even the trace of the cysts can start growing rapidly resulting to another complicated pregnancy. So better late than never, the patience can help in carrying a normal fetus, growing to a healthy baby.
